School Uniform

About this page

School uniform is strongly supported by Mount View families.

A school hat is compulsory headwear in Terms 1 and 4. Our School Council believes that the uniform, in giving children a group identity, helps to develop in a child a sense of belonging within the school community. It also provides a measure of security when groups are on excursions.

School Uniform Policy:

A uniform dress code reinforces in students a pride in their own appearance, instils recognition of themselves as an integral part of the school community, and assists in developing pride in representing their school. The following dress code states the expectations Mount View Primary School Council and community holds with regard to student appearance. This code will apply during school hours, while travelling to and from school and when students are engaged in school activities out of school hours. The Mount View student dress code takes precedence over student's individual preference in matters of dress. In the establishment of this Dress Code, issues such as expenses, health and safety and equality have been considered.
To create a sense of collective and individual pride in Mount View students and their identification with our school
To maintain and enhance the positive image of the school in the community.
To promote equality amongst all students
To assist in individual student safety and group security when travelling to and from school and on school excursions and activities
To promote active and safe participation in school life
To provide durable clothing that is cost effective and practical for our school environment and learning programs.
To facilitate a uniform supply service to families.

Exclusions to Dress Code
Items of clothing that are not suitable for school wear include: Denim jeans, shorts, skirts, dresses and jackets, Baseball caps
Beanies (except during winter months)
Rubber boots (unless for camps or excursions)
While there are no specific requirements in the areas of jewellery, hair colours/styles and make up, students are expected to exercise common sense and be mindful of any health and safety aspects in regards to hairstyles and the wearing of jewellery.
The dress, tunic and items with embroidered logos must be purchased from the Mount View’s preferred supplier - Primary School Wear (PSW). Families are encouraged to purchase all other items from PSW, but can come from other suppliers, such as department stores.
Students are strongly encouraged to use the MVPS backpack which can be purchased from PSW.
School Council has developed a Dress Code that we believe provides choice for the students, allows for students to safely engage in the many varied school activities, and caters for the financial constraints of families.
The Education Act 1958 – Alteration to the constituting order of Certain School Councils is relevant to the School Council’s authority to determine a uniform policy.
The School Council will approve a list of uniform items. This list includes SunSmart hats as compulsory headwear.
A review of the approved uniform items will be conducted on a biannual basis by representatives from Parents Association, interested School Council members and the Principal (or delegate).
The school reserves the right to add/delete/change garments on the Dress Code dependent on the activity, availability or recommendation from biannual review.
The Principal and staff will foster students’ pride in the wearing of the school uniform, and will supervise compliance with the SunSmart Policy.
The Dress Code applies during school hours, while travelling to and from school, and when students are on school excursions.
School Council will delegate uniform purchasing and sales to Primary School Wear (PSW). The Principal will ensure enrolling students have information about this policy and the availability of uniform.
The sale of school uniforms is handled by Primary School Wear (PSW) through their retail shop outlet in Mount Waverley. Recommendations for service improvement should be made through the Principal.

The only headwear that is acceptable is a SunSmart hat consistent with our Sunsmart policy. The hat must be worn outside from October 1 through to April 30 of the following year. Hats are not to be worn inside.
Parents Association may choose to operate a “Second Hand Uniform” shop for good quality second hand uniforms.
The student Dress Code, including details of uniform items and places of purchase, will be published in the newsletter at the start of each year, within parent information booklets and listed on the school website and Parents Association notice board.
Other school policies that support this policy are SunSmart and Student Supervision.
School Council requires the Principal be responsible for implementation of the Dress Code in a manner consistent with the Student Code of Conduct.
Arrangements can be made to supply uniforms via State Schools Relief for families experiencing economic hardship.
This policy will be reviewed as part of the school’s three-year review cycle.
This policy was last ratified by School Council in July 2011
